Often there were times upon hearing of a public shooting, when the thought would come to my mind "What happens to the person who is in a lock-down situation, where someone is seriously injured, and no one knows how to help?" Knowing the protocol of our amazing EMS personnel, it is against their code of conduct to enter into a situation where their own persons would be at risk. It was this situation of agonizing waiting on both ends that unsettled me. During my course work to finish my MEDID (Masters of Education Instructional Design) I was assigned to create a course of instruction to fill a local need. Upon talking to a friend who is an expert in public shootings, I asked the above question to him. He was not aware at that time of a protocol being used. I continued to ask around and did not get an answer that would satisfy my question. It was at that moment I realized that if I couldn't find an answer, I would ANSWER it.
Pulling from my previous medical history working in various clinics and hospitals, and combining it with my Masters in Education, I knew that there was still a piece missing from the answer. I needed ground zero experts who could contribute to this course. It was at that point that I was introduced to several of our Nations greatest heroes. Our special forces soldiers, our nations finest worked with me to help me understand what it is like being at ground zero, what can be done and how to best address the situation.
The propeller of motivation to teach this information came from my personal empowerment of receiving my second degree black belt in taekwondo. When one knows how to fight the fear of the unknown, and a potential threat, the debilitating fear is gone. Being armed with knowledge and experience (although limited) makes all the difference when YOU become face to face with TRAUMA.
